All-inclusive. What does that REALLY mean? The truth is it can mean a lot of things depending on the resort. The most basic definition is a resort that includes meals and drinks. These days there are all-inclusive resorts that cater to all tastes, lifestyles and budgets.

So how do you choose the right one? You need to decide what’s important to you for your vacation. Here are seven things to consider when selecting an all-inclusive resort for your next vacation.

1. Family-friendly vs Adults-only

Are you bringing the kids? Then you’ll want to be sure to select a resort with lots of amenities to keep the kids happy. Many resorts have splash pads and waterparks. Most resorts have complimentary kid’s clubs with organized activities. Some have fun activities such as mini-golf, surfing simulators and bowling alleys.

For adults-only vacations you need to decide if you want a resort geared towards romance, a resort geared towards partying, or maybe something in between. There is definitely a difference between a Couples-only resort and an Adults-only resort, so you’ll want to make sure you’re choosing the right one.

2. Food & Drinks

One of the biggest reasons people choose an all-inclusive resort is because it includes meals and drinks. However, the quality of food & drink can vary greatly from resort to resort. Will you be satisfied with a budget resort that is mostly buffet dining (mmmm……hot dog buffets)? Do you mind making restaurant reservations each evening? Do you expect lobster to be included? Do you want to enjoy room service? Are you OK with well drinks and local beer? Or do you want premium and top-shelf drinks? Are you a wine-lover? Will you be disappointed with a resort that only includes a few house wines?

3. Service

This is a big one. Do you want a resort with pool and beach wait service? You won’t find that at the budget resorts. Do you want your minibar replenished daily? Do you appreciate turndown service? Do you want to be spoiled by butler service? (Yes…..yes, I do).

4. Spa, Excursions and Golf

Did you know there are some all-inclusive resorts that include extras such as spa treatments, excursions, golf and SCUBA? These resorts may have a higher initial price tag, but they can save you a lot of money!

5. Accommodations

Do you just need a basic no-frills room to rest your head? Are you OK with a hard bed? Perhaps you want a view of the ocean or a swim-out pool right outside your room. What a about a nice big jacuzzi in your room or on your balcony? If you’re traveling with kids do you need a separate room for them? Is there a style you’re drawn to? Modern/contemporary, elegant chic, elegant luxury, laid-back tropical, etc.

2020 Update: During the pandemic there has been an increased demand for accommodations offering private pools or even semi-private swim-out plunge pools.

6. Resort Size

Do you want a large resort with lots of restaurants, activities and nightlife choices? Are you OK walking a lot or taking a golf cart to get around the resort? Or maybe you just want a more intimate, boutique resort.

2020 Update: During the pandemic, we’ve seen a huge increase in demand for smaller, more boutique resorts. The smaller occupancy levels at these resorts are perfect for social distancing!

7. Pool or Beach

Where do you think you’ll spend most of your time? Are you a beach-lover? Do you love going in the ocean? Do you like big waves or do you prefer a calm bay? Are you a fan of the swim-up bar in the pool? Do you want to see the ocean from the pool? Your answers to these questions should influence your choice of resort.
