Start with the fit

Is Riviera Maya right for your destination wedding?

Riviera Maya gives you a much wider range of settings than one resort strip. The corridor runs south from the Cancun area through Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Mayakoba and Akumal toward Tulum. Those locations are all marketed as Riviera Maya, but they do not create the same wedding or guest experience.

Riviera Maya may be a good fit if

You want more setting and resort variety.

  • You want to compare adults-only, family-friendly, boutique-style and large full-service resorts.
  • Your venue wish list includes beaches, gardens, chapels, terraces or tropical resort grounds.
  • Your group is comfortable with an airport transfer that varies based on the resort's location.
  • You want most of the wedding weekend centered around the resort.

Look elsewhere if

Your priority is the shortest, simplest arrival.

  • A longer transfer would be difficult for a large portion of your guest list.
  • You want the walkability and concentrated nightlife of Cancun's Hotel Zone.
  • You need every guest to reach the resort quickly after landing.
  • Your Tulum vision is a small off-resort or boutique-hotel wedding rather than an all-inclusive resort celebration.

One important distinction: a resort described as “Tulum area” may sit well outside Tulum itself. The next step is comparing the exact location, airport transfer, beach and wedding venues, not relying on the destination name alone.

One corridor, several different settings

What areas are included in Riviera Maya?

Riviera Maya is not one town or one resort zone. It covers a long stretch of coastline south of Cancun, and the location you choose affects airport transfers, off-resort access, wedding venues and the overall guest experience. Here is the practical version.

01

Puerto Morelos

A good fit for

Couples who want the northern end of Riviera Maya, generally easier airport access and a quieter setting than Cancun's Hotel Zone.

The trade-off

The resort experience varies depending on whether the property sits near town or along a more isolated section of coast. It does not offer Playa del Carmen's concentration of restaurants and nightlife.

02

Playa del Carmen & Playacar

A good fit for

Couples who want more access to shopping, restaurants and nightlife, with resorts located in or near one of Riviera Maya's busiest towns.

The trade-off

It feels more developed and active than the quieter resort areas farther south. Not every resort is walkable to central Playa del Carmen.

03

Mayakoba

A good fit for

Couples prioritizing a more private luxury setting, high-touch service and a polished resort complex close to Playa del Carmen.

The trade-off

Mayakoba sits at a higher price point and does not offer the same range of traditional all-inclusive wedding options found elsewhere along the corridor.

04

Puerto Aventuras & Akumal

A good fit for

Couples who want a more resort-centered wedding weekend, access to larger properties and a quieter setting farther south of Playa del Carmen.

The trade-off

Airport transfers are longer, and guests should not assume they can easily walk into Playa del Carmen or Tulum from the resort.

05

Tulum area

A good fit for

Couples drawn to Tulum's name, natural setting and access to cenotes, ruins and a more design-focused wedding aesthetic.

The trade-off

“Tulum” may describe the general area rather than a resort in Tulum itself. Transfers are typically the longest on this list, and boutique or off-resort weddings follow a different planning and pricing model than all-inclusive resort weddings.

Kathryn's take

I would not choose a Riviera Maya resort from the destination name alone. Confirm the exact location, realistic transfer time, beach, resort style and what guests can access beyond the property before narrowing the wedding-resort list.

Build the right shortlist

Not sure which Riviera Maya resorts belong on your list?

I have visited more than 235 all-inclusive resorts firsthand. I use that experience to compare Riviera Maya locations and resorts based on your guests, budget and wedding priorities.

Budget without the guesswork

How much does a Riviera Maya destination wedding cost?

There is no honest one-number answer. A Riviera Maya destination wedding has three separate budgets, and each one changes based on the resort, guest count, location, travel dates and choices you make along the way. For real numbers from past weddings, read how much a destination wedding costs at an all-inclusive resort.

01

Wedding events

Usually paid by the couple

What this includesCeremony and reception packages, private events, decor, entertainment and production choices such as the dance floor and lighting.

What changes the totalMost all-inclusive base packages include roughly 20 to 30 guests. A boutique hotel or off-resort event may price the venue, catering, rentals and vendors separately. If you're pricing the all-inclusive route, build your own estimate with my free cost calculator (boutique and off-resort pricing isn't included, since it varies too much to estimate this way).

02

Your travel

Paid by the couple

What this includesYour room, airfare, airport transfers, travel insurance and any pre-wedding planning travel you decide to make.

What changes the totalTravel dates, trip length, departure airport, room category, resort location and whether you extend the trip into a honeymoon.

03

Guest travel

Usually paid by each guest

What this includesEach guest's room, airfare, airport transfers, travel insurance and optional extras outside the wedding events.

What changes the totalThe room block, required length of stay, occupancy, departure city and whether guests travel during a high-demand week.

Choose the planning model first

An all-inclusive resort wedding and a boutique Tulum-style event may appear in the same destination search, but they do not use the same budget structure. Decide which experience you are pricing before comparing packages, guest costs or venue quotes.

Build the shortlist

How do you choose the right Riviera Maya wedding resort?

Start with the decisions that affect the entire group. A beautiful ceremony photo will not tell you where the resort actually sits along the corridor, how long guests will spend transferring from the airport or whether the room block works.

04

How private should the wedding feel?

Some venues sit near pools, restaurants or busy walkways. Ask what other guests can see and hear.

06

Can every guest navigate the resort?

Consider resort size, elevators, stairs, walking distances and transportation for older guests or anyone with mobility needs.

07

Where exactly is the resort?

“Riviera Maya” can mean a resort near Puerto Morelos or one much farther south. Confirm the transfer and what guests can realistically access beyond the property.

08

What is the beach actually like?

Do not assume every Riviera Maya property has the same wide, swimmable beach. Ask about the shoreline, water entry, ceremony setup and seasonal conditions.

09

What kind of trip do you want?

A lively social resort and a quiet retreat create very different wedding weekends, even at the same price point.

Resorts worth comparing

Riviera Maya wedding resorts for very different guest lists

This is a starting point, not a ranking or a complete list of every Riviera Maya resort I recommend. The properties below range from compact adults-only resorts to large family-friendly complexes. The right one depends on your guests, the beach you expect, the amount of activity you want and how the wedding costs are structured.

Wedding ceremony at UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya

Adults-onlyModern luxury

UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya

Best for: Adults-only wedding groups that care about food, service and contemporary design more than having the strongest swimming beach.

Why it stands out

The compact layout makes it easier for guests to find one another, while the dining and service feel more polished than at many large all-inclusive resorts.

Consider another resort if

Children are invited or a wide, calm, swimmable beach is one of your group's nonnegotiables.

Wedding structure: As more guests book into your wedding group, you can earn complimentary private events such as a reception or welcome party. These events include the space, food, drinks, staff and standard setup. Décor, DJ or band, dance floor, lighting and other production upgrades remain separate costs.

Destination wedding at Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun

Adults-onlyStandout beach

Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun

Best for: Adults-only groups that want a more traditional resort atmosphere with a beach that can be a major part of the guest experience.

Why it stands out

Maroma Beach gives this resort a meaningful advantage for couples who picture guests spending much of the weekend on the sand or in the water.

Consider another resort if

Children are invited or your group wants a newer, more architectural resort with a lively social scene.

2027 wedding snapshot: Eternal Love includes 20 guests and ranges from $5,899 to $6,249. Secrets Ultimate includes 30 guests and ranges from $6,999 to $7,399. Beyond Memorable covers 50 to 79 guests and ranges from $13,949 to $14,649 before additional guests and upgrades.

Destination wedding at Secrets Moxché Playa del Carmen

Adults-onlyPool and dining focus

Secrets Moxché Playa del Carmen

Best for: Adults-only groups that want strong food, contemporary design and several distinctive pool settings close to Playa del Carmen.

Why it stands out

Seven pool experiences, including cenote-inspired pools and an interior beach, give guests alternatives when the ocean is rocky, murky or affected by sargassum.

Consider another resort if

Your priority is an easy-entry swimming beach, a simple dining lineup or a compact property for guests with limited mobility.

2026 wedding snapshot: Eternal Love includes 20 guests and ranges from $5,049 to $5,949. Beyond Memorable includes up to 79 guests and ranges from $12,049 to $13,949. Every wedding venue carries an additional fee, and Moxché weddings generally cost more than weddings at comparable Riviera Maya resorts because the resort works with higher-end vendors.

Destination wedding at Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa

Family-friendly486 suites

Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa

Best for: Families and mixed-age wedding groups that want a manageable resort, children’s amenities and relatively easy airport access.

Why it stands out

The beachfront gazebo, multiple pools, small water park, kids club and family suites give a mixed-age group several practical ways to stay together.

Consider another resort if

A clear turquoise swimming beach or highly consistent dining is more important than family amenities and overall value.

2027 wedding snapshot: Eternal Love includes a private cocktail hour and reception for up to 20 guests and ranges from $4,849 to $5,649. Beyond Memorable adds a welcome cocktail, rehearsal dinner, ceremony and three-hour reception for a larger group.

Destination wedding at Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya

Family-friendlyAdults-only section

Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya

Best for: Larger mixed-age groups that want energetic entertainment and the option to separate adults-only guests from families within one resort complex.

Why it stands out

The Hacienda family section and adults-only Heaven section can serve different guests without splitting the wedding group across unrelated resorts.

Consider another resort if

Your group wants a quiet, intimate atmosphere or a long natural beach rather than protected coves.

Wedding structure: As more guests book into your wedding group, you can earn complimentary private events such as a reception or welcome party. The space, food, drinks, staff and standard setup are included, while décor, entertainment, dance floor and lighting are additional.

Wedding gazebo at Hyatt Zilara Riviera Maya

Adults-only291 suites

Hyatt Zilara Riviera Maya

Best for: Adults-only groups that want a smaller footprint, a laid-back atmosphere, a good pool and fewer competing activities.

Why it stands out

The compact layout is easy to navigate, and the quieter atmosphere can work well for groups that prefer to create their own fun.

Consider another resort if

You want extensive nightlife, a large restaurant lineup, highly private swim-out rooms or a reliably clear swimming beach.

2027 wedding snapshot: Wedding in Paradise includes up to 10 guests and ranges from $1,449 to $1,749. Eternal Love includes a private cocktail hour and three-hour plated reception for up to 20 guests and ranges from $4,849 to $5,649. Beyond Memorable includes events for up to 79 guests and ranges from $11,499 to $13,349.

Wedding arch at Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya

Adults-onlyBeach and snorkeling

Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya

Best for: Adults-only wedding groups that want a laid-back resort with a calm beach, snorkeling from shore and plenty of shade.

Why it stands out

Guests can snorkel directly from the resort's protected cove, where sea turtles are frequently seen. The beach, food, service, spa and lush setting make it a dependable all-around choice.

Consider another resort if

You want a short airport transfer, active nightlife or a compact layout. The winding paths can be confusing, and some areas require considerable walking.

2026 wedding snapshot: Eternal Love includes a private cocktail hour and reception for up to 20 guests and ranges from $5,049 to $5,949. Beyond Memorable includes up to 79 guests and ranges from $12,049 to $13,949 before additional guests and upgrades.

Destination wedding at Generations Riviera Maya

Adults-only + family-friendlyConnected complex

El Dorado Royale, Casitas Royale & Generations Riviera Maya

Best for: Multigenerational wedding groups that want adults-only and family-friendly accommodations within one connected resort complex.

How the three fit together

El Dorado Royale provides the larger adults-only base, Casitas adds a more intimate adults-only experience, and Generations gives families all-oceanfront suites. Adult Generations guests can access the two adults-only properties.

Consider another resort if

Your guests need a compact property or a standout swimming beach. The complex is large, requires considerable walking or golf-cart use, and the shoreline is rocky.

Wedding structure: Packages range from ceremony-focused options to the Private Enclave experience at Casitas Royale. Room bookings can earn credits toward private cocktail parties and receptions, while the connected complex gives couples access to venue options across all three resorts. Package pricing and credit terms must be reconfirmed for the wedding date.

Planning note: Wedding packages, venue fees and room-block benefits can change. Before you commit to a resort, I will confirm the current options and terms for your wedding date.

From shortlist to room block

What happens after you choose a Riviera Maya wedding resort?

Choosing the property is a major decision, but it is not the finish line. The next steps secure the date, define the room block and give your guests a clear way to book without making you their travel help desk.

01

Confirm the resort and wedding date

I verify the room options and group terms, introduce you to the resort's wedding team and assist with getting your wedding date booked.

02

Review the room block contract

Before anything is signed, I walk through deposits, deadlines, minimum stays, inventory and the financial responsibility tied to unused rooms. Learn why the room block matters.

03

Open booking for your guests

Your guests receive the trip details, room choices, payment instructions and a direct contact for their travel questions.

04

Manage travel through departure

I monitor the room block, collect travel details and help guests with their reservations while you continue planning the wedding itself.

One team does not replace the other.

Your travel advisor and resort wedding coordinator handle different parts of the process. See exactly who handles what so fewer questions and deadlines fall back on you.

"I do really want to say, from the bottom of our hearts, we really appreciate your help in this process. We'd be a wreck without you. Another example of how lucky we are to have you on this journey with us, because I’m not sure we would’ve survived with anyone else!!"

Riviera Maya wedding questions

What couples ask before choosing Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya covers a long stretch of coastline from Puerto Morelos toward Tulum. Resort searches may include Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Playacar, Mayakoba, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and the Tulum area. The exact location matters because transfers and off-resort access vary significantly.

Yes. Tulum sits at the southern end of the Riviera Maya corridor. However, a resort marketed as being in the “Tulum area” may be outside Tulum's town or hotel zone. Confirm the resort's exact address before making assumptions about location or transfer time.

Most guests use Cancun International Airport, but Tulum International Airport may work for some southern Riviera Maya resorts. The best choice depends on the resort's location, available flights and ground transportation. Confirm the airport before guests purchase airfare.

There is no single Riviera Maya wedding price. Your guest count, resort, venue, wedding package and reception choices all affect the total. A boutique or off-resort Tulum event may also use a different pricing structure than an all-inclusive resort wedding. If you're pricing the all-inclusive route, build your own estimate with my free cost calculator.

No, but all-inclusive resorts can make the guest experience easier to manage. Accommodations, meals and drinks are bundled into the stay. Boutique hotels, private venues and off-resort events can work, but they require a different approach to accommodations, transportation, catering and vendor planning.

There is no single Riviera Maya transfer time. A resort near Puerto Morelos and a resort near Tulum can be a significant distance apart. The airport, resort location, traffic and type of transportation all affect the trip.

Yes, if you choose a family-friendly resort and appropriate wedding venues. If anyone under the resort's adult age requirement may attend, that decision needs to be made before narrowing the resort list.

They manage different parts of the wedding. I help with resort selection, the group contract, room reservations and guest travel. The resort wedding team handles the ceremony, reception, menus, decor and other on-property event details.
