I’m an ocean-obsessed Midwesterner who’s personally checked out over 200 resorts (so you don’t have to) and runs a travel agency specializing in all-inclusive vacations and destination weddings.

My signature accessory? Dog hair. My love language? Witty sarcasm. I’m also a sucker for street tacos and a good spicy margarita. And no matter how hard I try, I just can’t quit the Real Housewives. Don’t judge.

Let’s talk about choosing a destination wedding location, because this is where most couples get stuck before they’ve even really started.

You pick Mexico or the Caribbean (great start), and suddenly you’re comparing six countries, twenty resorts, and trying to decode flight times like it’s your full-time job. It’s a lot. And while every destination looks beautiful online, not every destination wedding location is going to work for your guest list, your budget, or the kind of experience you actually want to create.

That’s exactly why I always start my couples with a curated list like this, real options that I know work, not just what Google says is popular. So join me as I share the most popular and some unique destination wedding locations that are always a hit with my clients!

Most Popular Destination Wedding Locations

Below is a list of the top six destination wedding locations that I begin our custom search with for almost every one of my couples. I love these regions because they have strong flight connections from across the US, the widest selection of wedding ready all-inclusive resorts, and travel & resort logistics that won’t leave you and your guests with massive headaches.

If there’s one destination that is consistently in the top list of destination wedding locations, it’s this stretch of the Mexican Caribbean. Bright turquoise water, white sand beaches, and more all-inclusive resort options than anywhere else. Cancun is compact and convenient; Riviera Maya is lush and more spread out. Together, they make up the most popular destination wedding corridor in the world, and for very good reason. No one ever regrets a destination wedding in Cancun!

Why it works: Easy flights from virtually every major US city, simple logistics, and the widest range of resort options at every price point. This is the destination I recommend most often.

Best for: Couples who want a beautiful, low-drama planning experience.

Approximate nonstop flight times from major US cities:

  • New York: ~4 hours
  • Miami: ~2.5 hours
  • Chicago: ~4 hours
  • Dallas: ~2.5–3 hours
  • Denver: ~4–5 hours
  • Seattle: ~6–6.5 hours

Puerto Vallarta has more personality than most all-inclusive destinations. It sits on the Pacific side of Mexico, which means a completely different feel than the Caribbean. Think gorgeous sunsets (not sunrises), incredible food, and a destination that actually feels like Mexico rather than a resort bubble. It is a dream location for destination weddings in Mexico!

Why it works: A great balance of resort experience and local culture. Guests who want to explore have plenty to do. Couples who want to stay planted at the pool can do that, too.

Best for: Couples who want a balance of resort and real-world experience.

Approximate nonstop flight times:

  • New York: ~6 hours
  • Miami: ~5–5.5 hours
  • Chicago: ~4.5–5 hours
  • Dallas: ~3 hours
  • Denver: ~3 hours
  • Seattle: ~4.5–5 hours

Cabo brings a more elevated, luxury-leaning vibe with dramatic desert-meets-ocean scenery that photographs beautifully. If aesthetics and overall atmosphere are high on your priority list, Cabo delivers that picturesque Mexico wedding experience.

Why it works: Upscale feel, reliable weather, and stunning backdrops that don’t require a filter.

Reality check: Swimmable beaches are limited in Cabo. If your guests are big swimmers or your heart is set on a beach ceremony with calm turquoise water, this may not be your spot. Go in with eyes open.

Best for: Couples prioritizing aesthetics, vibe, and a slightly more luxurious feel.

Approximate nonstop flight times:

  • New York: ~6–6.5 hours
  • Miami: ~6 hours
  • Chicago: ~4.5–5 hours
  • Dallas: ~3 hours
  • Denver: ~2.5–3 hours
  • Seattle: ~3.5 hours

Punta Cana is built for all-inclusive weddings. Long, wide beaches, swaying palm trees, an affordable price point, and a deep roster of all-inclusive resorts that know how to execute a wedding weekend well. This is a destination wedding location you won’t want to miss!

Why it works: Beautiful beaches, strong value, and more all-inclusive options than almost anywhere in the Caribbean. It’s an accessible destination that doesn’t ask guests to stretch their budgets to show up.

Reality check: Quality varies more resort-to-resort here than it does in Mexico at the same price point. The difference between a great Punta Cana wedding and a disappointing one often comes down to which property you choose. This is not the destination to book blindly.

Best for: Couples who want beautiful beaches and a great all-inclusive experience without the premium price tag of some other destinations.

Approximate nonstop flight times:

  • New York: ~4 hours
  • Miami: ~2.5 hours
  • Chicago: ~4.5 hours
  • Dallas: ~4–4.5 hours
  • Denver: ~6 hours
  • Seattle: ~7 hours

Jamaica has a distinct energy, it’s laid-back, warm, and full of personality. Guests tend to embrace the slower pace quickly, and the island has a charm that’s genuinely hard to replicate and incredibly unique as a destination wedding location.

Why it works: Strong resort options, a fun atmosphere, and a destination that feels nothing like a cookie-cutter beach trip.

Reality check: Jamaica operates on its own timeline, and I mean that literally. If you or your guests are planners, list-makers, or the kind of people who notice when things don’t run on schedule, that gap between expectation and reality can create friction. Service standards have also been inconsistent in recent years. It’s not a dealbreaker for the right couple, but it is worth knowing before you commit to anything.

Best for: Couples with a relaxed, go-with-the-flow vibe who want a destination with real personality.

Approximate nonstop flight times:

  • New York: ~3.5–4 hours
  • Miami: ~1.5–2 hours
  • Chicago: ~4 hours
  • Dallas: ~3.5–4 hours
  • Denver: ~5–6 hours
  • Seattle: ~7 hours

Unique Destinations Wedding Locations

Here’s where I’m going to be straight with you, you will never find me leading a call with these destinations. Not because they aren’t beautiful (they absolutely are), but because they come with fewer resort options, higher price points, and more complex logistics that aren’t the right fit for every couple who is planning a destination wedding.

Check them out yourself and see why I love these unique destination wedding locations for the right couple.

Costa Rica isn’t really an all-inclusive destination; it’s an experience destination. Beach, jungle, wildlife, and adventure all in one place. If your guests are the type who want more than a pool and a swim-up bar, Costa Rica gives them something to talk about for years.

Why it works: Incredible scenery, genuine adventure options, and a destination that feels unlike anywhere else in the region.

Reality check: All-inclusive options are limited, and logistics are more complex than Mexico or the Caribbean. This takes more planning and a higher tolerance for moving parts.

Best for: Couples who want an experience-driven wedding over a traditional resort wedding.

Approximate nonstop flight times:

  • New York: ~5–5.5 hours
  • Miami: ~3 hours
  • Chicago: ~5 hours
  • Dallas: ~4 hours
  • Denver: ~5–6 hours
  • Seattle: ~7–8 hours

Visually, St. Lucia might be the most stunning destination in the Caribbean. The Pitons alone make for destination wedding photos that genuinely stop people mid-scroll. It’s intimate, lush, and feels much more exclusive than the bigger all-inclusive corridors.

Why it works: Absolutely unique scenery and an upscale, intimate feel that’s hard to replicate elsewhere.

Reality check: Resorts are smaller, costs are higher, and transfers from the airport can be long. It also has fewer direct flights from US cities than Mexico or the DR, which matters when you’re coordinating a group.

Best for: Couples prioritizing scenery and exclusivity over group logistics.

Approximate nonstop flight times:

  • New York: ~4.5–5 hours
  • Miami: ~3.5 hours
  • Chicago: ~5–5.5 hours
  • Dallas: ~5 hours
  • Denver: ~7 hours
  • Seattle: ~9 hours

Antigua is quieter, less built-up, and genuinely beautiful in a way that doesn’t shout for attention. It’s 365 beaches for 365 days of the year (or so they say), and the water quality is exceptional. It is truly a one-of-a kind destination wedding location.

Why it works: A secluded, boutique feel with beautiful water and significantly fewer crowds than the bigger destinations.

Reality check: Limited resort inventory means fewer choices, and nightly rates tend to run higher. This works best for smaller, more intimate guest lists.

Best for: Couples who want a boutique-style destination with a quieter, more private feel.

Approximate nonstop flight times:

  • New York: ~4–4.5 hours
  • Miami: ~3 hours
  • Chicago: ~5–5.5 hours
  • Dallas: ~5–6 hours
  • Denver: ~7–8 hours
  • Seattle: ~9–10 hours

The Bahamas is known for some of the clearest, most stunning water in the entire Caribbean. It’s picture-perfect, guaranteed. As a bonus for those East Coast couples, the flight times are genuinely hard to beat.

Why it works: Short travel times (especially from the East Coast) and water that has to be seen to be believed. I promise you it is real.

Reality check: True all-inclusive options in the Bahamas are extremely limited. This isn’t a destination I’d point most destination wedding couples toward if an all-inclusive experience is the goal as the resort landscape just isn’t built for it the way Mexico or the Caribbean is. It can work for the right couple with the right expectations, but it requires a very different planning approach.

Best for: Couples who prioritize water quality and short flight times over all-inclusive convenience, and who are open to a non-traditional resort setup.

Approximate nonstop flight times:

  • New York: ~3 hours
  • Miami: ~1 hour
  • Chicago: ~3.5–4 hours
  • Dallas: ~3–3.5 hours
  • Denver: ~5 hours
  • Seattle: ~6.5–7 hours

Aruba is one of the most consistent destinations in the Caribbean, and I mean that in the best possible way. It sits outside the hurricane belt, gets almost no rain, and delivers reliably beautiful weather year-round. If peace of mind about weather is high on your list, Aruba is worth a serious look when reviewing your destination wedding location options.

Why it works: Exceptional weather reliability and a very predictable experience. Outside the hurricane belt, almost no rain, and reliably sunny skies year-round. If peace of mind about weather is high on your list, Aruba is worth a serious look.

Reality check: All-inclusive options are limited compared to Mexico or the DR, and pricing reflects that. It’s not the destination for couples watching the budget closely.

Best for: Couples who want great weather guarantees and minimal risk of disruptions — and are willing to pay a premium for it.

Approximate nonstop flight times:

  • New York: ~4.5–5 hours
  • Miami: ~2.5–3 hours
  • Chicago: ~5 hours
  • Dallas: ~5–5.5 hours
  • Denver: ~6–7 hours
  • Seattle: ~9–10 hours

Ask Kathryn

Q: What is the most popular destination wedding location for US couples?
A: Cancun and the Riviera Maya consistently top the list. Easy flights from nearly every major US city, the widest selection of all-inclusive resorts, and well-established wedding infrastructure make it the most accessible and reliable choice for most couples.

Q: What’s the easiest Caribbean destination for a destination wedding?
A: Jamaica and the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana) are among the easiest for logistics and group coordination, with strong resort options designed to handle destination weddings smoothly. Mexico’s Caribbean coast edges them both out on resort variety.

Q: Is an all-inclusive resort necessary for a destination wedding?
A: Not strictly necessary, but it simplifies everything — venue, catering, accommodations, and often the wedding package itself are all under one roof. For groups, it also makes budgeting much more predictable. Most of my couples opt for all-inclusive for exactly these reasons.

Q: How far in advance should we book a destination wedding?
A: At least 12–18 months out is ideal, especially at popular resorts during peak season. Some resorts book wedding dates more than two years in advance. The earlier you lock in a date and resort, the better.

Q: Do we need a travel advisor for a destination wedding?
A: You don’t need one, but here’s what changes when you work with someone who specializes in this: you skip the months of research, avoid the resorts that look great online but disappoint in person, and have someone in your corner if anything goes sideways. I’ve been to 200+ resorts — that’s the difference.

Q: What’s the best destination wedding location for a large guest list?
A: Punta Cana and Cancun/Riviera Maya both have resorts that excel at handling large groups. The Dominican Republic in particular offers strong value at scale. For groups over 50 guests, resort selection becomes even more critical — not every property is set up for it.

How To Know Which Destination Wedding Location Is Right For You

Here’s the honest answer: it depends on things you can’t figure out from a blog post. Your guest list size, where most people are flying from, your budget, your vibe, whether you want adults-only or family-friendly, all of that changes what recommendation I might make for you.

I’m a self-described spreadsheet nerd who has been to 200+ resorts, and my whole job is matching couples to the right destination and the right resort for them. Not just any resort but the right one.
