I previously gave you 8 ways to save money on your destination wedding. Now I’m sharing my thoughts on things that may be worth splurging on.
Since you’re already saving big by having a destination wedding at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico or the Caribbean, here are some places where you might want to splash out.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography wedding packages at all-inclusive resorts are similar to those you find at home. There are usually several different options at different price points.
I recommend spending a little more to have the photographer with you throughout the day. They’ll capture some of those gorgeous getting ready photos all the way through the always entertaining reception fun.
Most all-inclusive resorts will have some preferred photographers that they recommend, however many people have their heart set on bringing their own photographer, which can be a great investment.
Usually when you bring your own outside photographer, you will cover their travel expenses and the resort may charge an outside vendor fee. Talk with your photographer and wedding coordinator to find out these details.
VIDEOGRAPHY
This is another place where most couples are very happy they splurged. While still photography is beautiful and timeless, videography can capture some of those special, spontaneous moments that you’ll never get back.
Later on in life you’ll be able to watch your wedding video and see departed loved ones smile again. And that is priceless.
OUTSIDE WEDDING PLANNER
One of the best things about getting married at an all-inclusive resort is that it comes with a built-in wedding coordinator. The wedding department at the resort is wonderful & they work very hard to make your special day amazing. However, they are also very busy & often have more than one wedding per day.
If you want a dedicated wedding coordinator to be with you all day then consider hiring a local (to the destination) outside wedding planner. Don’t worry about stepping on the resort wedding coordinator’s toes, they love having the extra help and collaborating with other local wedding planners.
YOUR SUITE AT THE RESORT
I always recommend a larger suite for the wedding couple. You’re probably traveling with a lot of stuff & a larger suite gives you space to store it. It’s also common for the groom and his groomsmen to use your suite for getting ready before the ceremony. Which brings me to…
RENTING THE BRIDAL SUITE
Most all-inclusive resorts have a bridal suite you can rent to get ready. These vary by resort, but are usually located in the spa/salon area and offer plenty of space for the bride and her bridal party to get ready. It usually includes light snacks and sparkling wine.
RECEPTION ENTERTAINMENT
Who doesn’t love a good party? You’ll want to thank your friends and family for taking the time and spending the money to join you in paradise for your wedding. So what better way than throwing an amazing reception?
I think having some surprise moments in store for your guests during the reception is always a fun idea. Bring in a mariachi band if you’re in Mexico or a steel drum band in the Caribbean. Have a celebratory fireworks display. Hire la hora loca (crazy hour) entertainment. This Carnivalesque entertainment is always a sure-fire way to keep the party going!
DO A GROUP EXCURSION
Your friends and family would probably love the opportunity to leave the resort and explore the destination. A group excursion is a great way to offer this experience to your guests. Some of the top excursions include a snorkel catamaran trip, a sunset cruise, a golf outing or a visit to one of the island’s signature spots.
Many couples do this in lieu of the traditional welcome party/rehearsal dinner. It’s a great way to break the ice. This can also be a great thing to offer instead of traditional welcome bags. Collect memories, not things!
I hope this helps you choose where to save and where to splurge when planning your destination wedding!
