KP’s Honest Pros and Cons About Secrets Papagayo
Because we don’t do sugarcoating here. Here’s my honest perspective after staying at the property this summer.
Pros:
- Just 25–30 minutes from Liberia International Airport
- Friendly, attentive staff who make guests feel welcome
- Above-average food compared to other resorts in the brand
- Solid mixology in the Preferred Club lounge (seriously, book a Preferred Club room because these bartenders are 100% worth it)
- Gorgeous grounds and tropical landscaping that enhance every photo backdrop
Cons:
- The resort is spread out across hills, requiring shuttle service between areas
- Pools are smaller than at many comparable properties
- Beach isn’t what people imagine: black sand that looks more like dirt, limited chairs, no real drink service down there
- Some areas of the resort are showing signs of age and could benefit from updates
- Watch out for site fees—Costa Rica’s pricing often comes with higher private event minimums than Mexico or the Dominican Republic
Pro Tips:
- Costa Rica’s natural light can be harsh compared to other tropical destinations. Be sure to hire a photographer experienced in capturing the unique tones and contrasts of this setting.
- For accommodations, the Preferred Club Bungalow Suite Ocean View and the Honeymoon Suite stand out as the most romantic options, offering stunning views, extra privacy, and access to Preferred Club amenities.

Planning Your Secrets Papagayo Wedding
If you’re considering Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica for your destination wedding, there are a few key things to keep in mind.
First, reserve your preferred ceremony location as early as possible, since the most popular venues book quickly. It’s also important to factor additional costs into your budget, especially for lighting rentals and venue fees, which are required for most outdoor events. Timing is another consideration; November through April marks Costa Rica’s dry season, making it the most popular and reliable window for weddings.
Finally, remember the guest experience. With shuttle rides needed to navigate the hilly resort and a darker sand beach that differs from the typical Caribbean image, setting expectations ahead of time ensures your guests arrive prepared and excited for the unique charm of Costa Rica.
KP’s Brutally Honest Take on Costa Rica Weddings
If your #1 goal is a great beach resort, Costa Rica might not be your best match.
✅ The beaches here are not like Cancun’s powdery white sand.
✅ Wedding costs are typically higher in Costa Rica than at comparable resorts in Mexico or the Dominican Republic.
✅ While I love Costa Rica, I don’t love its all-inclusive beach resorts.
👉 IMO, the truly magical part of Costa Rica is inland: think Arenal’s volcano and hot springs, or the Monteverde cloud forest. That’s where you’ll really feel the country’s unique spirit.
But if you want lush tropical backdrops, nature-rich vibes, and an easy all-inclusive for adults-only wedding groups? Secrets Papagayo is a solid contender—just go in with eyes open.

Secrets Papagayo Wedding FAQs
Q: Is Secrets Papagayo adults-only?
Yes! It’s 18+ only, which means zero chance of a toddler meltdown during your vows.
Q: How far is the resort from the airport?
Just 25–30 minutes from Liberia (LIR). Super convenient for guests flying in from the U.S.
Q: What’s the beach like?
Let’s not sugarcoat it—it’s a darker, volcanic sand beach that reads more “Costa Rican cove” than “Instagrammable turquoise.” If beach perfection is your top priority, this may not be your spot.
Q: Is it easy to get around the resort?
Not exactly. The rooms are spread across steep hills, and you’ll need to take a shuttle van to get from point A to point B. Gorgeous views, but not super walkable in heels.
Q: How’s the food?
Surprisingly good—especially for the Secrets brand. The Preferred Club lounge even has some solid mixology happening. It’s not Michelin-starred, but you won’t hate it.
Q: Is Costa Rica more expensive for weddings than Mexico?
Yep. Wedding packages and private events tend to be pricier here. But if you’re craving a lush, nature-focused vibe, it could still be worth the splurge.
