After visiting more than 235 resorts and helping couples plan destination weddings for years, I’ve noticed one thing. The happiest couples aren’t the ones who spent the most money. They’re the ones who chose the experience they genuinely wanted.

One of the biggest complaints I hear from those who hosted a traditional wedding is, “I barely got to talk to anyone.” You spend the reception making laps around the room saying hello instead of actually enjoying time with your guests.

A destination wedding offers a completely different experience. Instead of one evening together, you’re creating several days of memories.

Many of my couples tell me one of their favorite parts wasn’t actually the wedding day. But, it was the welcome party, poolside conversations, group excursions and all other events where they get to watch their families actually get to know one another over several days.

A Destination wedding also comes with trade-offs and is certainly not for everyone.

- Passports may be needed

- Time off work is required for you and your guests

This is where couples are usually surprised. Everyone assumes a destination wedding is automatically cheaper. But this is not necessarily true.
Likewise, a traditional wedding isn’t automatically more expensive. The better question is: What experience are you getting for your investment and what are my priorities?

- Entertainment
- Florals
- Transportation
- Planning fees
- Multiple vendors
And the catch is, every additional guest increases your budget. That’s right, so if Auntie Sue wants to bring her latest boyfriend that means: one more chair, one more meal, one more favor, one more drink. It adds up quickly.
Destination Wedding Costs
A Destination wedding typically includes:
- Resort accommodations
- Wedding package
- Private event fees
- Optional décor upgrades
- Travel for the couple
Because many all-inclusive resorts bundle services together, budgeting often feels much simpler.
Over the past two years, my couples have averaged:

That investment usually includes several days of celebrations—not just one evening. So instead of asking which wedding is cheaper, ask yourself which experience provides the most value.

Legal vs Symbolic Weddings
Here’s something many couples don’t realize. If you choose a destination wedding, you don’t actually have to legally marry in another country, and in some cases you can’t or it just doesn’t make sense to.
Legal Ceremony
A legal ceremony abroad may require:
- Passports
- Birth certificates
- Divorce documentation (if applicable)
- Witnesses
- Government processing fees
- Earlier arrival dates
Some countries make this fairly straightforward while others…not so much.
Symbolic Ceremony
This is the option I recommend most often. A symbolic ceremony looks exactly like a traditional wedding.
You’ll still have:
- Your walk down the aisle
- Personalized vows
- Ring exchange
- Wedding pronouncement
The only difference? You complete the legal paperwork at home before or after your trip. Your guests never have to know the difference. You avoid government paperwork while keeping every meaningful wedding moment.
Guest Count Changes Everything
One of the biggest differences between a traditional wedding and a destination wedding is your guest list.
Traditional weddings often include everyone from coworkers to extended family, family friends and of course those plus-ones you’ve never met. Guest counts commonly reach 100–250 people.
Whereas destination wedding guest counts usually welcome around 30–80 guests. The travel commitment naturally narrows the list to the people who truly want to celebrate with you. And honestly? Many couples tell me this becomes one of their favorite part of hosting a destination wedding in Mexico or the Caribbean.

Which Wedding Creates Better Memories?
Now don’t get me wrong, traditional weddings are wonderful.
Your guests arrive, you get married, they enjoy cocktail hour, then you all eat dinner, dance the night away and heres the catch, everyone heads home at the end of the night. It’s a fantastic celebration—but it’s usually over in five or six hours.
A Destination wedding feels different. Instead of one evening, you’re seeing your guests at your welcome party, pool days, excursions, nightly group dinners and your farewell brunch. You actually get time with your guests. That slower pace is exactly why so many couples fall in love with destination weddings.

At the end of the day, there isn’t a right or wrong answer, only the wedding experience that’s right for you. If your dream is celebrating with 250 guests close to home, a traditional wedding may be the perfect fit. But if you’d rather spend several unforgettable days in paradise with your closest family and friends, it’s hard to beat a destination wedding.
